His Mighty Power: My Testimony

by Esther Chun-yi Wang
Edited by Leona Choy

Esther Wang was born in China after the Manchus, the Ch'ing Dynasty, was wrenched from power, and the fragile Chinese Republic took over under Dr. Sun Yat-sen. From her childhood, she was no stranger to arduous times, living through the period of the Nationalist Party under Chiang Kai-shek, the humiliating, crushing Japanese occupation, full- scale civil war and the devastating, wild years of Communist Party rule.

Her biography paints a picture of the life and times of Chinese Christians under those adverse conditions. Esther shares the story of her own conversion and early realization that God's hand was upon her life. She reveals her struggles to understand what total surrender to the Lord was all about. She tells of how patiently the Lord taught her lessons of faith when there seemed no way out of difficult trials and situations. Little by little she learned how to witness humbly and sacrificially for the Lord. Relationships with fellow Christian workers sometimes tried her patience but taught her deeper lessons in trust. Some of the miraculous events of God's provision for her personally and for the orphans under her care are breathtaking.

Esther had the opportunity to study in a Bible Institute in Canada and tells of her first experiences in living in a Western culture. Refusing the chance to stay longer or to study further, she obeyed the Lord and hurried to return to her ministry in China even though war clouds were menacingly darker on the horizon.

This English translation and adaptation of the first of Esther's books written more than 40 years ago, brings her life story through 1948, just before the Communists proclaimed their "liberation" of China in October 1949.

After the events of this first book telling of Esther's youth and early years of serving the Lord, the story is continued in her second book, How Amazing! -- now translated into English and being prepared for publication in 1997 by Golden Morning Publishing. Esther endured nearly 11 years in prison and another seven years of hardship in a labor camp. She was released in 1979.

Instead of being bitter about her long years of persecution, Esther testified that it was the grace and wisdom of the Lord to let her be purified through her imprisonment, adversities and afflictions. "Count it all joy" is her watchword. After all, Esther believes, the Scripture says that all who belong to the Lord will suffer persecution, as the Lord did Himself. We should not think it strange when it happens to us.

At this writing, Esther faithfully continues her active, fervent witness for the Lord in the United States among Chinese people in church and student ministry. She shares the pulpit and teaches classes, extending through trips back to China, Europe, Canada and other parts of Asia. Wherever the Lord leads her, she testifies of God's mighty power to teach her lessons of faith and keep her obedient to Him.

From this true life story, we learn how the Lord can use a faithful and obedient Christian in spite of weakness, adverse conditions and age. The publisher is delighted to make Esther's first book available in English to a whole new generation of readers so that they, too, will be challenged to "follow the Lord fully" as the biblical Caleb did throughout his long life.

As Caleb asked for "another mountain" to conquer when he was in his eighties, so does Esther Wang--in her eighties!

Soon to come: A sequel by Esther Wang relating her eleven year experience in a Communist prison in China titled How Amazing! A work-in-progress to be released later in 1998
