A Call to the Church

by Wang Mingdao

Translated by Ted Choy, edited by Leona Choy.

What does it cost to follow Christ? Sometimes 25 years in a Communist prison from age 55-80. But pastor Wang Mingdao was "a prisoner of the Lord" not of the government. He was there by God's appointment.

During his pastorate in Beijing, China, Wang wrote many Christian books that were known in churches throughout China. His writings while in prison were all destroyed by the guards. After his release from prison, he was physically no longer able to write. His books in Chinese are still circulated and loved throughout the world by Chinese Christians.

This book, translated with his permission, is the only English translation of 20 of the best of Wang's messages of conviction and courage delivered just before his arrest. For the first time English readers can be challenged by Wang's perceptive and faith-filled expositions of the Scriptures.

Born in 1900, the son of a medical doctor, Wang was given a Chinese name meaning "iron." When he was 14, after a stormy and unsettled youth in a bad environment, Wang became a Christian. Immediately he accepted a high biblical standard of spiritual and moral discipline for which he was well-known and respected by his fellow Chinese. Even in the heat of accusations and political "struggles" against him in the Cultural Revolution, no attacks on his personal character could succeed. When he was 20 and considering the ministry, he adopted his now famous name, Mingdao, which means "understanding the Word."

Christians who suffer for Christ in China even today are eager to read Wang's books above all others. He was as gold refined in the fire, insisting on holy living and against evil in every form. Not only did he hold himself to his standards, but he was severe and vocal against those he considered nominal Christians or self-seekers.

Both Wang and his wife were arrested in 1955 and sentenced to 15 years as anti- revolutionaries. Later his sentence was extended to life in prison. His wife was put into one prison, he in another, and each did not know whether the other was alive for nearly a quarter century. She was released after 23 years, and Wang, with eyesight nearly gone, feeble, aged, and quite deaf, was released from prison without explanation in 1980 as he began his ninth decade. He faithfully continued to testify to God's love and faithfulness until his promotion to heaven.
